The Paris Commune. The Bloody Week. Monday, May 22. In the morning, the first fires are caused by shells fired from the cannons of the Versailles army, placed yesterday at the Trocadero. The cannon fire is aimed at the barracks of the National Guard on the Champs-de-Mars. The National Guard and the insurgents of the Paris Commune build barricades in the city. One of these, in Place Blanche, is erected and defended by 120 women. Fighting takes place in the streets and squares of Paris. By the end of the day, the Versailles troops have nevertheless conquered the Champs-Elysées, Saint-Lazare, and Montparnasse.
