The Paris Commune. Monday, April 24, 1871. The issue of food supplies was dramatic during the winter siege of Paris by the Prussians, while in recent weeks after the uprising and the establishment of the Commune it has become less crucial. Except for bread, there is enough food thanks to the stocks accumulated after the siege and the cultivation of farmland and gardens located between the fortifications and the German lines. However, starting today, the effects of the railway blockade imposed by Thiers' government in Versailles are beginning to be felt, making supplies more difficult and causing prices to rise. Furthermore, keep in mind that the expense of purchasing food absorbs the main part of current family spending and therefore, as already mentioned, since the day before yesterday, municipal butcher shops have been created to ease family budgets. To these have been added public sales of potatoes, as well as the operation of municipal canteens and meal distributions. To get bread, special vouchers are distributed.
