The Paris Commune. Wednesday, April 19, 1871. Last night, the session of the Commune, which began yesterday evening, approved the program that appears under the name “Déclaration de la Commune de Paris au peuple français” (Declaration of the Paris Commune to the French people). In summary, Paris claims the Republic, broad autonomy for Paris and for all the communes of France. Overall, the program is certainly not revolutionary in a Jacobin or socialist sense; it seems mainly aimed at reassuring the French petite bourgeoisie and thus gaining its support against the government of Versailles.
