The Paris Commune. Thursday, April 6, 1871. Paris. Today the guillotine burns amid the jubilation of many residents of the Roquette district. Everything started at the initiative of a subcommittee of the National Guard and one of its battalions, and found enthusiastic popular support. In the Journal Officiel, there is an appeal by the painter Gustave Courbet addressed to all the artists of Paris, inviting them to gather in assembly to help restore their moral standing and recover the arts, to urgently reopen the museums, and to plan an upcoming exhibition, also inviting foreign artists to participate. Jaroslaw Dombrowski, soldier, Polish patriot, member of the International, and General of the Commune, is from today the commander of the Paris garrison. Versailles appoints General Mac Mahon as commander-in-chief of the government army.
