Artist statement

Extended statement

I continuously seek to accumulate knowledge and experiences in the world around me and in my work; at the same time, I try to give image and substance to my visions. In my research and works, I express my relationship with time and space, with a preference for long segments of time rather than the instant, for spaces with an absence of backgrounds or limited horizons. At other times, the works reveal the search in the context of confrontation with the mutations and metamorphoses that surround and involve me. Or I express my discomfort in the face of the violence and lack of humanity of the human race. In short, in my works I try to synthesize my cultural, philosophical, and ethical knowledge and beliefs. Mine is a continuous search for synthesis between form and content, ethics and aesthetics.

I have been a photographer all my life and have exhibited as an artist for over two decades. At seven years old I discovered how much I liked photography, at thirteen I was developing photographs in my own small darkroom. At eighteen, just before enrolling in the faculty of philosophy, I was already a professional photographer working for a newspaper. I have gone through, one by one, all the analog photographic phases of black and white and then color, and then the advent of digital, and in the meantime I discovered artistic expression. If there is a strong presence of photographic techniques in my works, there is, however, no documentation. My works can be visionary, with an apparently ancient flavor, dramatic, or bursts of color. Much evokes deep ties with Italian Futurism and Surrealism. Increasingly, they are material, with a mix of ancient and current techniques. I work with encaustic photography: these are photographs printed on wooden panels and worked in encaustic with beeswax and natural resins. Alongside this, I continue with my wife the research in the world of camera-less photography, photography without the aid of cameras.

I love the relationship with my audience, with those who come to visit me in the studio even unexpectedly: talking, comparing, fantasizing, feeling good together even if perhaps in diversity. This way I can make myself understood, explain my journey, the point I have reached with my works. From the public I get inspiration for future paths.

My work, my research are not solitary: I work in symbiosis with my wife Lia, not just together or with her beside me, but truly in symbiosis: we elaborate, discuss, argue, synthesize, agree, convince each other, and in the end we create the works.

The works are signed Paolo Aldi if they originate from an idea that is purely mine and are carried out only by me. Others, those created four-handed with Lia, are signed with the initials LPA, Lia Paolo Aldi in fact.

All, whether unique works or works in limited and numbered editions, are signed, dated, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
