The Lake - The Technique

The technique with which these images are created is rather complex, laborious, and slow. At first, it is a photograph taken in personally significant and ideal places and moments. Then comes the processing, which reconstructs, using digital techniques, the stylistic features typical of pinhole photography: light fall-off at the corners of the photo, lack of sharpness, and other issues of this ancient photographic practice carried out with cameras without lenses. Afterwards, with a printer, I make a pigment print on a flexible support, then I do an image transfer and transfer the pigments onto a poplar wood panel. The flexible support is removed. Then I apply several coats of sandarac varnish. Next comes the encaustic, that is, a pour of beeswax melted together with other waxes and natural resins, thus obtaining further colorations and a resistant and pleasantly tactile surface. Finally, the waxing is polished manually and patiently over the course of a couple of weeks.
