Muffazioni - The technique

Muffazioni is the result of a long reflection on time and within time, which began in 1984 when a series of color photographic proofs got wet. I wanted to experiment to see what would happen if I left them in a damp place, separated into small strips. After a certain amount of time, the first molds appeared and the first shifts of the photographic gelatin. I then decided to encourage a real process of molding, an action I call muffazione.

By moving the small photographs from one shelter to another, from humidity to dryness and vice versa, I cultivated a small breeding ground of industrious molds. Over the years, Muffazioni took shape, which I would define as a natural informal.

The photographs depicted the inauguration of new spaces, groups of people who wanted to be “immortalized,” as can still be seen quite distinctly in the Sixth Muffazione. They were images of the human desire for immortality, the conviction of being able to leave an indelible mark on the world, the pride of being stronger than nature and time. But these traces, precisely over time, could only mold, oxidize, be devoured, get lost in their own abyss, liquefy, bury themselves until almost every form had almost completely disappeared.

At this point, with a further photographic step, by strongly enlarging on canvas the small photographic proofs prey to mold and become something else, I arrived at these works, which, although no longer having any relation to the original reality, are in every respect new realities.
